Put the bug on the ground for the first time in months on Monday. I am going to have to raise the rear a bit though as the motor is only about 2" off the ground, a little too low for me.

Okay guys have a couple things I need your input on.

1:So I am trying to get my brake lights, turn signals and high beams to work. I have low beams and tail lights but the others aren't working. I've traced all wiring and it all seems to be intact and connected correctly. I've also replaced the brake pressure switches and bulbs to make sure they weren't bad. Still no brake lights, turn signals and high beams.

Anyone have any clue? This is one of the last few things I need to finish to drive the bug.

2:Also took the bug for its maiden voyage this afternoon around the block to see how it drove. It drove straight and road smooth but the trans tends to grind or shift hard when shifting to second gear when shifting at a normal rate. If I wait a few seconds between first and second it doesn't grind at all. I changed the trans hear oil today so I know that is good and full.

Does this mean second gear is on it's way out or?

1) Probably a grounding issue. 99% of the time when I have lighting issues in a VW, it has to do with a poor ground somewhere.

2) Second gear synchro is on its way out. You may be able to drive it that way for along time, or you may lose that gear entirely in a week. Time for a fresh trans.

That sucks, I was hoping it wouldn't be anything serious. Guess I'll be looking for a good used trans for this 67

You do know you're supposed to use straight GL-4, which is hard to find? Other grades can make the synchros unhappy.

If it goes into gear fine while shifting up, but has trouble while shifting down, adjustment isn't likely to change things. But it is free, and worth a try.

You're gonna open that can of worms, eh?

For the record, Mitch at Sandpoint Bug has built many transmission over the years, and has used both types of lube in every imaginable combination of engine/tranny/air-cooled VW with no discernible difference in wear or failure that could be attributed to using GL5 over GL4.

Haha, only paid attention to the weight of the oil going in the trans. Learn something new everyday.

Well I found the mounts from the trans cradle to the trans were toast and the cradle wasn't bolted all the way tight. Dumb PO. Fixed all that and it doesn't grind nearly as bad anymore. Only here and there now. notice the mounts separated completely.

I also finished the exterior and drove it around yesterday.

That should make a huge difference. Did you check the front mount, too?

Yeah the front mount is in good shape, not oil soaked like the rear mounts were.
