Just hit the shock mount with a big hammer and the axle tube will come off. |

I don't want the entire axel out. Just the bearings. Its the bearing that are in the backing plate. I went in to do a break adjustment and decided to redo everything since I was in there. |

This only works if you have the axle tube retainers unbolted, and it can be hard on the fulcrum plates and their retaining circlips, etc. Then you have to reseal the retainers and reinstall them.
I am lucky to have access to a very nice axle bearing puller from a friend who is a professional mechanic. They are still available new, but can be very expensive. The Idiot manual shows how to make your own, but it only works if the bearings are a gentle fit into their respective housing. If they are stuck tight, the idiot method will usually fail.
The poor man's method is to weld a piece of tubing to the inner bearing cage, (with the tubing/pipe covering the protruding axle splines) then rig up a way to mount that tubing to a slide hammer. Works great if you are planning to replace the bearings anyway. |

I appreciate the information. I don't have a welder. I am gonna go into a VW shop here in CDA and see if I can get a mechanic to come to my place and pull them. I have all the parts and I am ready to go except for those bearing. I don't want to miss the show at the end of the month. |
