Sump stud snapped! Now What?

when putting nuts back on after draining oil, one of the ends of the sump plate studs broke off. I had some trouble getting the nut off initially, but thought it was due to dirt or whatever in the threads. Cleaned them all off prior to putting it all back in. Four of the nuts hand tightened just fine, with two having a bit of trouble. I was able to get one of them on okay, but not the last.

I didn't put that much pressure on it at all, using my off hand, small socket held at the head of the wrench.

I'd say maybe a quarter inch snapped off. With the strainer and plate in/on, there is almost enough of the stud that the nut could fit on it.

I believe it is the stud that is attached to the pick up tube.

Any suggestions?

Easy fix...use some vice grips and back the stud out, go easy and clamp the vice grips down tight. If you have enough of the stud showing, you can use 2 nuts to remove the stud (sounds like you don't though). You can easily install the new stud (or temporarily use a bolt) with the 2 nut method again.
The stud is not attached to the pick-up tube...Those cap nuts don't take much torque at all...going from memory here cause I haven't looked in awhile, I think maybe 7 ft.lbs rings a bell?

Uhhh, No.

One of the studs DOES hold the oil pickup tube. It won't come loose except by unscrewing the nut with a right angle open end. I frequently replace that stud with a bolt when the engine is apart, if that's the case, you really have a problem. Try to get a look up in there with a little mirror to see what's going on. In the meantime, you can leave 1 nut missing and put a blob of silicone to keep it from leaking.

I'm fairly certain that it is the one that is connected to the pick up tube, as the bolt head (or whatever is up there) feels different/larger than the others.

I will look up there with a mirror next chance I get.

Can it be taken out and replaced if I had a right angle open end? Or is this a major ordeal?

If it's a stud with a nut, you need to bend a 10mm wrench at a right angle so you can unscrew the nut, then you can turn out the stud just like the others.
It is a pain in the a$$.

Today I was able to get a picture of this broken sump stud.



It looks like this is a bolt (and the one on the left as well) but is rising higher than the others. it is 10 mm.

Is this what it is supposed to look like?

Whoa, Whoa, Whoa.
You have an aftermarket deep sump on there.. So unscrew the 6 nuts that hold it to the actual engine block, and then replace the bolt. Bolt it back on with a paper gasket and some sealer.

Yes, I knew that it was an after market sump all along ... but stupid me didn't mention it. sorry, sorry, sorry.

Was able to back the bolt out, and replace with a stud.

way easier than I thought.
