Hello

I have an 82 Rabbit 1.7 l FI that just dies when driving. It takes a little set time (from a couple of minutes to hours) before it will start again. I can hear the fuel pump run, when the key is turned on, but when you pull the coil wire and put it close to ground to check for spark, there is none. I have checked all the wire connections that I can think of and
I have replaced the Dist cap and rotor, electronic ignition control unit and the fuel pump relay. I have cleaned the grounds under the hood and it still quits. Any thoughts about why it is doing this?

Thank You
Richard

Could be alot of things...but...don't try the "Ground the coil wire" trick on a computer controlled/ fuel injected vehicle unless you want to be buying a computer/ brain for the vehicle....really quickly. Use a volt meter, check voltage instead. Sounds like it could be a fuel pressure regulator or something like that. I'm not familiar with VW fuel injection....but if the vehicle runs, you know your systems are functioning properly. You might have a fuel pump that's working, but just can't hold pressure for very long....there should be a port of some sort on your fuel rail or fuel line that you can use a fuel pressure gauge and verify pressure there. A good manual should tell you an acceptable pressure. Hope this gets you started in the right direction!!

Thank You for your thoughts. I know its not fuel related, it is something electrical but what it is I do not know.

Thank You
