Finally got around to looking a bit more into this after the Car d'Alene.
Decided to test for exhaust leaks by blocking both tailpipes while the motor was idling.... it kept running! (and a whistling sound was audible from the exhaust gasses finding another way out). I did expect it to stumble, run for a while, then slowly die... but I definitely didn't expect it to keep running indefinitely.
The sad thing is - I had just taken off the exhaust, and replaced all gaskets, including the clamps between the j-pipes and the muffler. Everything got tightened very well, and I just don't see how I can get it to seal better.
I'm almost definitely certain the culprit is the joint between the muffler and the j-pipes.
Are there any other alternatives in terms of using something for that joint, other than the clamps?

| I'm kinda curious about this too.... I just installed a fresh exhaust with the same new clamps a few weeks ago and I've a leak in the same spot. |

I found alot of trouble using fiber gaskets in the clamps. I use the wire style gaskets, and I really crank down on them.
Plus I never re-use....can't reqlly, when I;m basically almost killing them sometimes.
J-tubes, are an inferior product, and 98% are the cheap $15 set, that doesn't give you any more power, gives more heat to the heads, and never seem to seal right due to their chinese origins. |

Yeah, i did use the wire ones... and cranked them up as much as I could.. I wonder if some gentle 'masaging' with a screw driver, or something to that effect in order to press the gasket tightly in between the two pipes before the clamp goes on will help...
I am surprised that no-one has come up with a different 'mechanism' of sealing that joint... might have to fab something myself if i can't get it to work...

Flanged is always better. The "fix" for this would be a total replacement of the exhaust system.  |

First thing I would try is to coat the J-Tube with HIGH temperature sealant before sliding it together, then slide it together and clamp as usual.
Many have told me that high temp won't hold up, but I have used it several times on SBC header gaskets and it works excellent.
If all else fails, buy 4 flanges and two gaskets and cut and weld it so that it is a flanged fit.
