|
|
I need a mechanic to help with a tune-up of my 1600 dual-carb. The carbs look to be Solex.
http://www.rcvwclub.org/phpBB2/album_pic.php?pic_id=130
It currently runs fine, good power, idles perfectly, and the timing seems to be spot on, but I am getting a few exhaust backfires when down-shifting, so I suspect it's running a little lean (a tune or larger jets needed?), or the carbs are not balanced.
anyone that can have a look at the carbs for me, or anyone you would recommend?
thanks,

if it's popping out the exhaust when decelerating, or between shifts, it may be an exhaust leak.
Balance issues will sometimes pop out the carb, or it will stumble badly when accelerating. |

yeah, it does have a bit of a flat spot on acceleration too... especially when not warmed up yet...
I'll check for exhaust leaks... I did change the exhaust on it, though it was backfiring even with the old exhaust... _________________ JordanK, CDA

for grins, pull the plugs and take a look at the color of them. Report back!
BTW, just looked at your picture, I think you should rethink the fan belt install, I don't think the filter cover can take the revs like that! |

Yeah... that was in the midst of setting it up for full flow, done about a month ago... The full story is here, if anyone has time to waste:

was the best picture of the carb/linkages setup I could find ...
I'll pull the plugs this weekend and see what the verdict is... _________________ JordanK, CDA

If all else fails, go and see Mike at Mitchels garage in Spokane,WA. Awsome mechanic. 509-483-1867 and tell him that Matt Russell sent you. I emailed Troy Hobbs in regards of a great and honest mechanic and he recommended him big time. Good luck! _________________ Keep the Spirit rollin! |

Still haven't gotten to pulling the plugs out yet - was busy installing my new oil pressure and oil temp gauges this weekend.
Drove around the CDA lake on saturday, the backfires still happening, mostly when down-gearing, with foot off the gas pedal... It also seems I now have a little oil leak off the front oil seal... frustrating...
I'll try to pull the plugs tonight, and if they look good and there is no other obvious explanation - I'll try to take it to Mitchels. Thanks for the recommendation. _________________ JordanK, CDA

wait, backfiring when you let off the gas and decel? too rich, and has a small exhusat leak. the hot gas coming out is getting air from the leak and igniting.
I'd adjust your carbs, but it appears someone has walked away with my sycronometer, and I now have to wait three days for a new set. It really suck becuase I just built a 1915, and it's waiting to come to life. |

I can swing by with my snail if you can round up 2 alternator woodruff keys. (I dropped them and they both turned into air when they hit the ground) |
