Monday night I fired up the bug for the first time. It's a rebuilt (by me!) 1600DP in a '68 body. Stock rebuild with a .110 Engle cam. Have to say I was suprised when it fired up on the first try! Ran it for 20 minutes to break in the cam, and the engine sounded strong, with no leaks or warning lights! Just need to chase down an electrical problem (no running lights, blinkers, or brake lights) and rebuild the brakes.
Which brings me to this: Anyone have any tips on loosening the rubber brake hoses from the metal lines? Mine are on so tight I can't get the nut to budge (of course, I'm using a flare wrench).

Very cool.
I would drop some Marvel Mystery oil on the threads and let is soak for a while. Short of that, replace the hard lines to the master cylinder and distribution block in the back. very easy and cheap. |

I'm going to try some penetrating oil on them tonight. Just out of curiosity, the nuts aren't reverse threaded, are they?

5/8 flare end wrench, or vice grips since you're going to replace them anyway. Standard threads. You have to knock out the retaining tabs first.

UPDATE
Got the car on the road today! Just a quick test around the block (twice!). Noticed a few things:
NO BRAKES!!!! Bled and rebled and rebled the system, just can't seem to get them right. I'm thinking the next step is a pressure bleed setup. Anyone try one of these?
Stalls on idle. I've got a vacuum leak somewhere.
Clutch engages hard. Let up easy on the pedal and WHAM! you're in gear. Should be a simple adjustment.
If anyone feels like crawling under someone else's bug this weekend, shoot me an email. I could use some advice and tips.
