|
|
64 beetle, swingaxle. The front has been changed to disks, 4 lug. I want to change the rear to 4 lug as well, but don't want to spend a grand on read disk conversion too...
Can anyone confirm/deny if rear drums from a later beetle (4 lug drums) work on an earlier swingaxle rear end?
I'm hoping that i'm lucky and can just get a pair of drums, turn them, and then they would just fit.. _________________ JordanK, CDA

If I remember correctly, it will work if you put a spacer between the drum and nut. Type 3 fits directly, it's been a while. |

For a '64 Beetle, if it's still short axle...I would get '68 and later Beetle rear backing plates/brakes and drums....then just machine off some of the snout til the axle nuts goes on far enough. The same applies for '66 and later rear type 3, four lug brakes...which I have if you need them. |

This brings up a great topic.
I need early Type 3 wide 5 rear brake assemblies. Anyone? Anyone? |

How early? '61-'63 were basically '68 and later Beetle brakes, then throw the 'Swirl' drums on and go. '64-'65 are the same brakes as '66 and later four lug, just didn't have the holes for adjusting. I happen to have a set of '64-'65 rear type 3's, plus some '66 and later stuff. |

If I'm right, I'll need pre 65 Type 3, which are WAY bigger than what I have now, and still have the wide 5 pattern.
I'm running 30mm wide and I think the Type 3 is 45mm wide and the drum itself is a bit bigger all around, hence the need for the backing plates.
If you have the drums/backing plates etc. that would be WAY cool. |
