Two ways to be really warm in an air-cooled VW in the winter. Install a gas heater, or park it next to the furnace in the garage.

I drove A/C VW's for many years in the winter, I now drive a Toyota. I'm either not as hardy as I once was, or I just gave up. Either way, I'm warm now.
